With 560 million active users, Twitter is the second most active social media site. The average Twitter user ranges from 18-29 years of age, however it is a very popular social media outlet among teenagers. There are many celebrities, who stand as role models for teenagers, who actively use Twitter, such as Katy Perry (@katyperry), Justin Bieber (@justinbieber), Lady Gaga (@ladygaga), Taylor Swift, (@taylorswift13), Harry Styles (@harry_styles), Miley Cyrus (@mileycyrus), Ed Sheeran (@edsheeran), Drake (@drake), and more. So what are these teenage "role models" tweeting?
Miley Cyrus (@MileyCyrus)
In this tweet, Miley Cyrus is threatening her father to release private matters over social media sites because of an intense argument. This shows the amount of disrespect Miley has for her father. To take private matters and release them over the internet is ridiculous as well as immature. Letting the world know of a disagreement and release threats over the internet rather than in privacy, shows how far the original plan of SNL sites has come to. Social Networking Sites were/are use to be connected with family and friends from around the world; but recently it has become a link in creating arguments, disagreements, and a creator of arising conflicts. Twitter is supposed to let people know what's going on the in the world and in people's lives, but some things just need to be kept in private.
Miley Cyrus (@mileyCyrus)
In this tweet, Miley Cyrus is distributing the actions of calling paparazzi derogatory names that should never be said over the internet. This tweet shows that Cyrus's behavior is acceptable and teenagers who admire Miley as a star should adapt this sort of behavior to their own lives. Adopting this behavior in the teenage culture would be inappropriate and would influence the attitude of being disrespectful to those around them. Miley is a huge role model to the teenage world and exposing her unsuitable actions to adolescents could do more harm than praise.
Amanda Bynes (@amandabynes)
In this tweet, Amanda Bynes is insulting Rihanna for not being pretty enough for Chris Brown and reviving the scandalous past of Brown hitting Rihanna. To start off, this tweet is highly inappropriate and immature. The text is highly out of context and is none of Bynes' business to bring up a rough past. This tweet not only demonstrates the lack of respect, but also shows how naive people can be. These tweets are distributed to young teenagers and are influential by saying these actions are acceptable and not a big deal. Amanda Bynes' tweet is an example of cyber bullying and how harassing someone over via internet is tolerable. If Amanda and Rihanna have issues and need to resolve them, they might as well take it outside rather than take it to the internet for the whole world to see.
Lady Gaga (@ladyGaga) and Perez Hilton (@perezhilton)
In this tweet, Lady Gaga and Perez Hilton are lashing out in a battle via twitter. Both are throwing insults, threats and scenarios that unfortunate to view. Teenagers having access to these twitter fights are harmful because teenagers are currently in the rebellious stage and are deciding whether there attitudes and behaviors are appropriate to society. Having two "grown up" adults argue over silly matters that should be kept in private and are negatively influencing teenagers that naive and impertinent behavior is conventional and practical for the public eye to view.
Kanye West (@KanyeWest)
In this tweet, Kanye West is back-lashing at Jimmy Kimmel for doing a parody on West's recent BBC1 radio interview. Regarding this tweet, West is highly offended by the impersonation and is willing to express his frustrated emotions over the internet rather than in private. Again, this goes back to the idea of how these celebrities influence admired teenagers who are the face of the future. If teenagers are influenced and regard this behavior decently, the future generation of the world will have a different take on the use of manners and politeness to others in our culture. Since teenagers are admired with these stars and look up to them as role models; celebrities need to be more aware and perceptive as to how their actions impact others rather than their original intentions of the tweet.
